Are waiting periods waived when you switch health insurance to Sanitas in Spain?

Yes. Sanitas waives its waiting periods, called carencias in Spanish, when you switch after at least 12 months of continuous private health insurance with another insurer in Spain. Childbirth keeps its 8-month wait, and on worldwide cover the waits still apply to overseas treatment. There is no medical checkup; the policy can start within 24 to 72 hours of approval.

Already covered by private health insurance in Spain but thinking of making a change? You're not alone. Thousands of expats and residents switch to Sanitas every year — looking for better value, smoother service, and a provider that truly understands their needs.

Whether you're unhappy with your current insurer, need a policy that supports visa or residency requirements, or just want broader coverage and faster support, Sanitas makes switching simple. With a vast medical network, multilingual assistance, and plans tailored for life in Spain, you're in safe hands from day one.

Switching to Sanitas health insurance in Spain at a glance

  • Who qualifies: Sanitas waives the waiting periods when you have held private health insurance in Spain with another insurer for at least 12 months and can show continuous cover for the previous year.
  • Cover held abroad: Private health insurance held in another country does not count towards the 12 months, except a policy with a Bupa company, which follows the Bupa to Sanitas transfer rules.
  • Waiting periods waived: Sanitas waives qualification periods, except giving birth, for customers switching from another private provider who have completed similar qualification periods.
  • Childbirth: Sanitas keeps the qualification period for giving birth when a customer switches from another insurer. That wait is 8 months from the policy start date, as set out in our guide to every Sanitas waiting period.
  • Worldwide cover: Sanitas applies the qualification period to claims for overseas treatment when the new policy includes worldwide cover.
  • No medical checkup: Sanitas requires no medical checkup with a doctor to switch, only a short health questionnaire within the application form.
  • Medical history: Sanitas assesses medical history during the application and advises if any pre-existing conditions cannot be covered before the policy is finalised.
  • Start date: Sanitas can start the new policy within 24 to 72 hours once the switching documentation is approved.
  • Plans: Sanitas Mas Salud, Sanitas Top Quantum, Sanitas Mas 90 and Sanitas Premium 500 are the plans people switch to, all with no co-payments.
  • Who arranges it: HealthPlan Spain is an authorised Sanitas agent (agent code 22395) in Marbella that arranges the switch to Sanitas in English, at the same price as buying direct from Sanitas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I switch if I'm not currently insured in Spain?

Yes, but only from BUPA and only to specific plans (Sanitas Mas Salud, Sanitas Mas Salud Family and Sanitas Top Quantum).

Can I bring my medical history with me?

No. Your medical history will be assessed as part of the application process. You will be advised if any pre-existing conditions cannot be covered before the policy is finalised. Sanitas will waive your qualification periods only.

What If I'm still receiving treatment from my current insurer?

If you're receiving treatment under another provider, let us know. If you simply need a repeat prescription then this will be covered as long as Sanitas covers the condition. If you are undergoing complex treatment for serious or chronic conditions then this is unlikely to be covered.

How long does the switch take?

In most cases, once your documentation is approved, your new Sanitas policy can start within 24 to 72 hours. We'll guide you through every step.

Will I have qualification periods again?

No, with the exception of child birth. If you're switching from another private provider and have completed similar qualification periods, these will be waived. If you take a Sanitas policy that includes worldwide cover, qualification period will apply to claims for overseas treatment.

Can I include my family in the switch?

Absolutely. Sanitas offers joint policies for couples, families, and even newborns, with multi-person discounts in many cases.

Do you accept international policies (e.g. BUPA, Cigna)?

Yes, but only from companies within the BUPA Global group. We can review documentation from BUPA and help you transfer to a Sanitas plan that matches or exceeds your current coverage.

Will I lose access to my doctors?

Not necessarily. Many doctors work with multiple insurers, including Sanitas.

Can I switch mid-policy?

Yes, but we recommend checking cancellation terms with your current insurer.

Do I need a medical checkup with a doctor to switch?

No. Just complete a short health questionnaire which is a part of the application form for our underwriting team.

What do I need to provide to switch to Sanitas?

Switching to Sanitas needs your existing health insurance policy and a completed application form. The HealthPlan Spain team reviews the existing policy and checks whether your benefits can be matched. Qualification periods are waived with the exception of giving birth. The application form includes a short health questionnaire for the underwriting team, so no medical checkup with a doctor is needed.

Which Sanitas plan should I switch to?

Sanitas Mas Salud is the plan most people move to, with private cover in Spain and no co-payments. Sanitas Top Quantum adds access to any GP in Spain. Sanitas Mas 90 covers Spain plus 70% worldwide, for people who want to keep a similar level of protection to their existing policy. Sanitas Premium 500 covers Spain plus 90% worldwide and is closest to an international policy.

How long must I have been insured for Sanitas to waive waiting periods when I switch?

Sanitas waives its waiting periods, except childbirth, when you have held private health insurance in Spain with another insurer for at least 12 months. You will need proof of continuous cover for the previous year. Private health insurance held in another country does not count, except a policy with a Bupa company. Waiting periods do not apply to an accident, or to a life-threatening and unexpected illness diagnosed after the policy starts, when the policy covers that care.
