Baggage Handler Strike Threatens Chaos at Spanish Airports in December Spain News

As the festive season approaches, a looming strike by baggage handlers threatens to disrupt travel plans for many during the busy December long weekend in Spain. Falling just weeks before Christmas, this period sees a surge in activity at Spanish airports, as expatriates return home for the holidays and others embark on city breaks for last-minute festive shopping.

The Union General de Trabajadores (UGT) has intensified the pressure by calling for a strike among baggage handlers during the December 'puente' (long weekend) at all Aena airports across Spain. The workers are protesting against what they perceive as 'uncertainty' stemming from the decision of navigation managers to shift the responsibility of ground services from Iberia to other companies at multiple airports.

According to the UGT union, many of the companies that have been awarded these contracts have a history of complaints for not adhering to workers' rights. The union accuses Aena of prioritising cost savings over a genuine and firm commitment to its staff. Over the past seven years, the UGT alleges that these companies have been embroiled in thousands of lawsuits, collective disputes, and strike calls for violating labour agreements.

Furthermore, the union and workers claim that Aena has failed to establish any effective mechanism to sanction managers who do not comply with their commitments. In response to these grievances, the UGT has announced a strike period between December 4 and 10, although no confirmation on these dates has been given. The union and workers have declared that the work stoppages will persist until those involved "assume their responsibilities."

Should the industrial action proceed as planned, it is anticipated to cause widespread chaos, delays, and the potential for flight cancellations at airports across Spain. Travellers are advised to stay informed about the evolving situation, keep an eye on updates from airlines, and consider alternative plans if they have travel arrangements during the specified dates. The strike threatens to cast a shadow over the holiday plans of many during this traditionally bustling travel period.
