Frequently asked questions
Clear answers to the questions we are asked most about choosing a Sanitas plan.
Which Sanitas plans are accepted for a Spanish visa?
A Spanish visa application needs a policy with no co-payments and full hospital cover, and some consulates also ask for no waiting periods. Mas Salud, Mas Salud Family, Mas 90, Top Quantum, Premium 500 and Residents Visa have no co-payments and full hospital cover, and only Residents Visa has no waiting periods. Sanitas International Students meets the student visa rules. Residents Visa also comes with the certificate the consulate asks for, issued once the policy is activated.
What is the difference between Mas Salud, Mas Salud Optima and Mas Salud Plus?
All three cover the same doctors, tests, surgery, hospital care and dental treatment. Mas Salud has no co-payments, so you pay nothing per visit. Mas Salud Optima and Mas Salud Plus charge a small fee per service instead, which keeps the monthly premium lower. Optima has the lowest premium of the three and Plus gives you the first six services of the year free.
How much does Sanitas health insurance cost?
Sanitas prices depend on your age, your province and the plan. The range starts at 22.10 euros a month for Sanitas Accede, an outpatient plan with co-payments, and full cover without co-payments costs more. Enter your date of birth and province in the tool above for your exact monthly price, with no obligation to apply.
What is the difference between plans with and without co-payments?
A plan with co-payments has a lower monthly premium and a small fixed fee each time you use a service, such as a consultation or a test. A plan without co-payments has one monthly premium and nothing to pay when you see a doctor or specialist. Both give you the same Sanitas network, and only plans without co-payments are accepted for a visa.
Are Sanitas and Bupa the same company?
Sanitas has been part of the Bupa group since 1989 and is its Spanish insurer. Your policy is a Spanish policy issued by Sanitas, with the Bupa group behind it. If you already hold Bupa cover anywhere in the world, you can move to Sanitas with the waiting periods waived, except childbirth.
Do I need a medical to apply for a Sanitas plan?
No. There is no medical examination. You answer a short health questionnaire on the application, and Sanitas decides on that. A condition you already have is usually excluded from the policy rather than charged for, and everything else is covered at the standard price.
Which Sanitas plan should I choose?
The right Sanitas plan depends on what you need the policy for, such as a visa, study, a family, self-employment or cover worldwide. For a Spanish visa applied for from outside the European Union, Sanitas Residents Visa includes the certificate the consulate asks for. Sanitas International Students is built for the Spanish student visa, Sanitas Mas Salud suits singles and couples, and Sanitas Mas Salud Family suits families. Self-employed people registered in Spain can choose Sanitas Professional or Sanitas Professional Plus, and people aged 60 and over can choose Sanitas Unico. For worldwide cover, choose Sanitas Mas 90 or Sanitas Premium 500. For cover in the United States, choose Sanitas Mas 90, Sanitas Mas 90 Plus or Sanitas Premium 500. Compare them side by side with your own price.
Is it cheaper to buy a Sanitas plan direct from Sanitas?
No, a Sanitas plan costs the same premium through HealthPlan Spain as it does bought direct from Sanitas. HealthPlan Spain is an authorised Sanitas agent (agent code 22395) in Marbella, registered as an insurance mediator with the Dirección General de Seguros y Fondos de Pensiones (the Spanish insurance regulator), code C0320X5769518Z. Your policy is insured by Sanitas, and our English-speaking team arranges and supports it by phone or email, Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm and Saturday 9am to 2pm.
Which Sanitas plans do not cover hospital stays?
Sanitas Accede, Sanitas Avanza and Sanitas Unico do not cover hospital stays, and none of the three is accepted for a Spanish visa. Accede and Unico cover consultations, tests and simple treatments, with no surgery. Avanza adds more than 400 outpatient surgical procedures that need no hospital admission. The other 12 Sanitas plans include hospital care and surgery.
