Spain saw a record fall in the number of unemployed people in August, signalling what may be the start of its economic recovery out of the slump caused by the global pandemic.
The country’s State Public Employment Service (SEPE) registered 82,583 fewer unemployed people compared to July and represents the largest monthly fall on record.
Traditionally, August usually sees a rise in unemployment due to a decrease in a number of sectors including tourism, however, this year there has been six months of continuous drops.
Since August 2020, the numbers have fallen by 468,899, down 12.3 per cent.
Since February, the number of unemployed has already reduced by more than 675,000 people. However, the country still has a considerable number of people still looking for work with the current figure standing at 3,333,915 unemployed.

Unemployment by Age
One of the highlights of the latest figures was the reduction in unemployed in those under the age of 25.
August saw a reduction of 17,120 people or 6.52 per cent less than in July. Combined with the figures over the past six months, it means that more than 121,000 of those under 25 have now found employment.
Many job losses can of course be attributed to the pandemic, however, there are now fewer young people unemployed than there were prior to the pandemic, down 65,463 or 2.08 per cent.
Unemployment by gender
Unemployment among men saw the biggest fall in August with 37,080 or 2.65 per cent finding work.
Compared to August 2020, there have been 243,2020 or 15.15 per cent fewer males unemployed.
There was also a significant fall for women with 45,503 or 2.26 per cent more finding work.
In comparison to August 2020, 225,697 fewer women were registered, down 10.27%.
Over the past six months, 332,000 women have ceased to be unemployed.
Unemployment by autonomous region
A total of 13 of the country’s 19 autonomous communities saw a reduction in unemployment with the most significant fall registered in Andalusia where there were 32,102 fewer unemployed.
Other notable reductions were seen in the Canary Islands (-19,844) and Catalonia (-17,186).
However, it wasn’t good news for four regions that saw a rise in unemployment which were the Valencian Community (+6,606), Madrid (+3,526), the Basque Country (+3,058) and Castilla y León (+956).
In total, ten autonomous communities and Melilla have an unemployment rate lower than that registered before the start of the health crisis.
In July, a total of 1,977,597 people were in receipt of state unemployment benefits (El Paro) with the average person receiving 1,049.9 euros, an increase of 35.6 euros or 3.5 per cent on the same month in 2020.
