With the Christmas holidays just around the corner, the Spanish and regional governments have agreed not to impose any further travel restrictions at least until the New Year.

However, the authorities said they would be maintaining the current restrictions that are in place against the majority of arrivals.

Spain currently permits entry to all travellers who are fully vaccinated against Covid including countries that fall under the high-risk list, without imposing any further restrictions.

Spain’s current list of at-risk EU countries includes Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechia, Cyprus, Croatia, Denmark, Germany, Slovenia, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Slovakia, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, and Sweden.

Travellers from all the above-mentioned EU/Schengen Area countries can travel to Spain as long as they meet all of the current entry requirements which includes presenting a valid vaccination certificate to show they have been fully vaccinated using a vaccine that is recognised by Spain.

Travellers who possess a certificate to show that they have fully recovered from Covid are also permitted to enter Spain providing that the certificate is no older than 180 days.

Any EU or Schengen area national who does not possess a valid vaccination or recovery certificate may still enter Spain, but must provide a negative PCR or rapid antigen test result. PCR tests must be carried out no more than 72 hours prior to entry, whereas the rapid antigen test must be no more than 48 hours at the time of arrival.

Anyone under the age of 12, is not currently required to produce either of these documents.

On December, 13, Spain extended the restrictions that are currently in place for nine South African countries with the measures extended until at least December 26.

These countries are Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Travellers from these countries must continue to quarantine for 10 days following their arrival in Spain or for the whole duration if they are staying for less than 10 days.

All travellers entering Spain must continue to complete a health control form prior to travel.

It comes despite the number of Covid infections soaring up and down the country. Over the weekend, the cumulative incidence rate increased by a further 60 points and now stands at a worrying 381.26 cases per 100,000.

The latest Ministry of Health data shows that the highest infection rate is now in those under the age of 12 with the cumulative incidence rate currently at 617 per 100,000.

On December 15, the vaccination campaign for those between 5 and 11 years of age will begin.

Over 1.3 million doses of the child vaccine arrived in Spain on Monday and will be distributed to the regional health authorities so that vaccines can proceed on Wednesday.
