Mallorca Cove Balearic Islands Scrap Covid Restrictions In Boost To Tourism Spain News

The Balearic Islands, a firm favourite with British holidaymakers has lifted more Covid restrictions in a boost to the tourism sector.

It comes as the islands which include Menorca, Majorca and Ibiza witnessed an improvement in the number of Covid infections.

Many of the restrictions that have been in place since the height of the pandemic have now been removed including those imposed on restaurants, nightlife venues and bars.

Restrictions on the number of people that can sit together have also now been lifted, however, there are two that remain. This includes the need for masks to be worn inside restaurants, bars and clubs, along with the rule on mon-smoking on terraces which will also remain in force.

A government spokesperson said, "As of today, the restrictions in force until now on cultural, sporting and other mass events will no longer be effective.

"The limitations on the celebration of popular festivals, religious celebrations, parades, dances and the like, or those that were also applied in more specific areas, such as those referring to dance academies, outdoor social activities, will also cease to be effective."

"The ban on smoking on public terraces or in outdoor spaces for public use is also maintained when maintaining a minimum distance of two metres from other people cannot be guaranteed. You also can't smoke when you're on the move."

The following measures must also be respected:-

  • Vaccination against COVID-19.
  • Frequent hand hygiene.
  • Hygiene if you have respiratory symptoms (avoid coughing directly into the air, cover your mouth with the inside of your forearm in these cases, and avoid touching your face, nose, and eyes).
  • Interpersonal physical safety distance.
  • The use of face masks indoors and when interpersonal distance cannot be maintained.
  • Preference for outdoor spaces to carry out activities.
  • Correct ventilation of closed spaces and cleaning and disinfection of surfaces.

Covid Situation in the Balearics

Official statistics from the country’s health ministry on Friday show that the Balearic islands currently has a 14-day cumulative incidence rate of 561.38 cases per 100,000 residents.

This is considerably lower than the number recorded just two weeks previous when the figure was 1,435.88 per 100,000.

The regional government says that the islands are now in a situation of continuous decline.

Hospital admissions have also seen a big fall over the past two weeks. On Friday, the ministry data reported that there were now 226 people in regional hospitals, down from 385 just two weeks ago.

The number of covid cases nationally has been falling for a number of weeks with the national 14-day cumulative incidence rate now at 613.15 per 100,000 residents compared to 1,461,71 which was recorded just a fortnight ago.
