Online scamming has been around for many years, and on Monday, April 4, the Spanish police issued a statement warning the public of another one. This time the scam is done using WhatsApp and is predominantly aimed at women.
Fraudsters operating the scam contact women via the App, pretending to be their children. They tell them that they urgently need some money and could they send them some. They then claim that they are having trouble with their phone terminal, so cannot contact their mother directly, or receive any incoming calls.
Unfortunately, some victims have gone ahead and transferred the money as requested, only to then speak to their children who have no idea whatsoever about the money request. The realisation then sinks in that they have in fact been scammed and it is now too late to cancel the cash transfer.

It has been reported that several scams of this nature have been detected in different areas across the country, with the fraudsters managing to swindle cash amounts ranging from 2,000 to 26,000 euros.
The National Police have advised that anyone who finds themself in this situation, should simply remain calm and check that the person asking for the money is actually the person they claim to be, before parting with any money.
In an era where cyber fraud is rife, it is important to always remember not to give personnel information or bank details to anyone asking for them either online or over the telephone.
