As energy bills and the cost of our shopping trolleys increase, finding ways to save money is vital.

The Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) released its annual report on the shopping trolley on Tuesday and it showed that the average trolley full of groceries has increased by 15.2 per cent in Spain. A figure the organisation has never before seen since it began to make its annual report in 1988.

The study was carried out by taking into account more than 173,392 prices, in 1,180 supermarkets, in 65 cities in Spain and online.

By doing this and analysing 238 food, hygiene or drugstore products from 80 different chains, the organisation has been able to decipher which supermarkets in Spain have been the cheapest as well as the most expensive.

The report also said that 95 per cent of all products that are lining the supermarket shelves have increased in price this year. The price of sunflower oil has increased by a whopping 118 per cent in the last 12 months.

Some other items that have seen a huge price increase this year include margarine and muffins which are 75 per cent more expensive, the price of bananas from the Canary Islands has increased by 64 per cent and macaroni by 56 per cent.

At the other end of the scale, avocados are 10 per cent cheaper, kiwi’s 6 per cent and shampoo is 5 per cent cheaper than a year ago.

The OCU report showed that the Alcampo hypermarket located in Coia (Vigo) is the cheapest supermarket in the entire country.

Despite the fact that Alcampo has proved to be the cheapest supermarket chain in 27 of the cities analysed, Tifer Supermarkets has been considered by the organisation to be the cheapest chain in Spain ahead of Dani and Family Cash.

The research also showed that for fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and fish, pantry staples and personal care items, Mercadona was one of the cheapest supermarkets in 34 of the Spanish regions. In fact, out of the 65 cities studied, the ever-popular supermarket came out on top in these 10 areas, Alcobendas, Barkaldo, Bilbao, Huelva, Lleida, Lugo, Marbella, Ourense, Pamplona and Vitoria.

It was also the second cheapest in nine other cities and ranked number three in 15 others.

The cheapest establishment for fresh produce was found to be Dani Supermarkets and Family Cash, while at Novavenda and Amazon you would expect to pay a lot more.

For the most economical basket with basic products, Hiperdino and Tifer Supermarkets are the cheapest and for baskets made up of branded products, Sangüi Supermarkets and ROS Supermarkets proved to have the lowest price.

On the other end of the scale, Novavenda and Altoaragón proved to be the most expensive for basic products and Carrefour Express and Dia & Go are the most expensive for brands.

The most expensive supermarket chain in the country is Sánchez Romero, along with others such as Ulabox, Novavenda and Amazon.

In regards to the cities with the cheapest and most expensive shopping baskets, Vigo and Ciudad Real showed to be the cheapest, followed by Granada, Almería, Jerez de la Frontera, Puertollano, Huelva and Palencia.

As for autonomous communities La Rioja, Extremadura, Galicia and Murcia stand out as the cheapest autonomous communities when it comes to shopping.

The most expensive cities when it comes to filling the shopping basket, however, are once again Palma and Barcelona, as well as others like Girona, Madrid and Alcobendas, where we can find some of the highest prices in the whole country.

The most expensive autonomous communities highlighted in the report were the Balearic Islands and Catalonia.
