Spanish Government Will Announce Measures To Contain Food Prices At The End Of December Spain News

Spain’s government will announce at the end of this month a new package of measures that will tackle the rising cost of food.

The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sanchez, announced the news on Tuesday, December 6, while meeting with journalists at the gates of the Congress of Deputies during the celebrations of Constitution Day.

The President explained that while many of the current measures will be maintained, some “very ambitious” new measures will be added, including measures to contain the price of food.

Since the middle of 2022, there has been great concern about the rising cost of a shopping basket. In fact, in April of this year, the CPI for food made a substantial jump to double figures and has continued to rise ever since.

Despite the continuous rise of groceries, suggestions by vice president Yolanda Diaz that supermarkets should offer a weekly affordable shopping basket were dismissed. She called for the “commitment” to the country of all those involved to help in dealing with “exceptional situations”.

Diaz declared that “Food prices are making everyday life difficult for families. Neither the large distributors nor anyone else can show indifference.

The measure, however, caused a split within the Government. Luis Planas, the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, reiterated his dismissal of setting a basic food basket with a maximum price and recommended “voluntary” price adjustments “with the collaboration of all those involved in the food chain”.

As reported by lasexta.com, he said that “What is needed is to make a collective effort so that each one assumes responsibility for it. With dialogue and effort on the part of all, we can ensure that citizens have food at better prices.

It is obvious that times are tough and are only going to get tougher, so it is paramount that the government step in to help.

According to the inflation data for the month of October, food prices have continued to rise and have increased by 15.4 percent compared to this time last year. That is the largest jump since the beginning of January back in 1994.
