Renfe, the primary railway operator in Spain, has recently revealed that customers who use their Cercanias, Rodalies, and Media Distancia services can apply for a pass that grants them free travel between May 1 and August 31.
The Spanish government has approved this initiative, which has gained popularity among frequent train travellers. Renfe has already issued over 255,000 free passes for the Cercanias local rail service and Media Distancia (mid-distance) lines in Andalucia during the first two months of 2023. Additionally, 6,690 Avant (long-distance trains) passes with a 50 percent discount have also been issued.
To obtain the new free passes, users must be registered with Renfe and can download them from the Renfe Cercanias app or the www.renfe.com website for Media Distancia and Avant passes. The passes are also available at train stations and ticket vending machines.
For Cercanias and Rodalies services, users must pay a 10 euro deposit, which is refunded if the pass is used for 16 or more journeys. The deposit for Media Distancia trains is 20 euros, which is also refunded if the pass is used for 16 or more trips.
Renfe has also created a recurring subscription for children under 14 without ID for Media Distancia services. The father, mother, or guardian of the minor can purchase a maximum of four child passes for one origin and destination during the period of validity, using their NIF, NIE or passport.
If Renfe believes a passenger is abusing the system, for example by not cancelling unused seats, their season ticket will be suspended and their deposit won't be returned. Customers will receive two warnings before their pass is cancelled.
