The Most Stolen Car Brands In Spain Revealed Spain News

Car thieves in Spain have been demonstrating their expertise in targeting the latest generation vehicles by exploiting the wireless connections of features like Bluetooth, smart keys, and contactless keys. Through the use of simple repeaters, devices, knowledge, and patience, these hackers are able to gain unauthorised access, open, and even start the vehicles.

However, it's important to note that not all cars have the same vulnerability to theft. Certain vehicle brands are more susceptible due to their attractiveness to thieves, either because of the brand's reputation, the value of the vehicle, or the ease of selling it whole or in parts on the black market.

During the year 2022, a staggering 30,982 vehicles were reported stolen in Spain, averaging approximately 85 cars per day. Although this figure represents a decrease compared to previous years, Spain does not hold the highest car theft rate in Europe. Based on data from the previous year, that distinction belongs to countries like Italy, the Czech Republic, and Sweden.

When it comes to the geographical distribution of car thefts within Spain, three autonomous communities stand out as hotspots for such incidents. Madrid claims the highest incidence with a concerning 24 percent of reported thefts, closely followed by Catalonia at 23.9 percent and Andalusia completing the podium, accounting for 18 percent of car thefts in the country.

In the realm of car theft, thieves are selective in their choice of targets, often focusing on specific brands. Mercedes-Benz cars top the list as the preferred choice among thieves, making up 14.7 percent of the stolen vehicles. Following closely behind are BMWs, representing 14.4 percent of thefts, indicating a clear inclination toward high-end and luxury vehicles.

Toyota claims the third position among the car brands favoured by thieves, with 14.6 percent of stolen cars being of this make. Audi secures the fourth spot with 10.4 percent of thefts.

Additionally, Ford and Volkswagen account for 7.8 percent and 6.8 percent of stolen cars, respectively, demonstrating that thieves target a diverse range of brands.

A notable characteristic of stolen cars is their age, with a significant proportion having been on the road for more than five years. Therefore, owners of vehicles falling into this category, particularly those from the favoured brands targeted by car thieves, should exercise heightened caution when their vehicles are not in use. Taking additional precautions, such as using robust anti-theft measures and parking in secure locations, can help minimise the risk of falling victim to car theft and prevent potential distressing situations.
