So how well did Spain do in the different categories?
Since the first Expat Insider survey in 2014, Spain has consistently proven itself as a top-notch destination for expats, ranking in the top 10 of the Quality of Life Index. For 2023, Spain has once again excelled in this category, particularly shining in Leisure Options, where it claims the coveted 1st position. An overwhelming 88% of expats are delighted with the country's rich culture and vibrant nightlife, far surpassing the global average of 68%. Additionally, a staggering 91% express contentment with ample opportunities for recreational sports, compared to 75% globally. The country's inviting climate and weather further enhance expats' ability to indulge in outdoor activities and enjoy a fulfilling lifestyle.
In the Ease of Settling In Index, Spain may have missed out on a top 10 spot, securing the 12th position. However, it rises to an impressive 6th place in the Culture & Welcome Subcategory. Remarkably, four in five expats (80%) feel right at home in Spain, a significant 18 percentage points higher than the global average of 62%. The country's warm and welcoming atmosphere has clearly left a positive impact on expats' sense of belonging.
Despite its many strengths, Spain performs relatively less well in the Working Abroad Index, securing the 34th position. Less than half of expats (49%) agree that moving to Spain has improved their career prospects, trailing behind the global average of 59%. Additionally, 36% express dissatisfaction with the local job market, compared to 26% globally. However, in the Work & Leisure Subcategory, Spain ranks an encouraging 10th, largely attributed to expats' satisfaction with their work-life balance. A notable 73% of expats express contentment in this area, surpassing the global average of 63%.
When it comes to finances, Spain appears to be a favourable destination for expats. The country secured the 13th position in the Personal Finance Index, with more than two-thirds of expats (69%) expressing satisfaction with the general cost of living, compared to only 44% globally. In the Expat Essentials Index, Spain claims the 16th position, particularly excelling in the affordability of housing, where it secures an impressive 13th place out of 53 countries surveyed.
Overall, Spain has truly won over the hearts of expats, with a remarkable 87% expressing contentment with their life in the country, far exceeding the global average of 72%. With its outstanding quality of life, welcoming communities, and favourable financial aspects, Spain continues to emerge as the ultimate destination for expats seeking a fulfilling and enriching experience in 2023 and beyond.
