UPDATE: Driving Licence Exchange For Over 70s With Expired Licences Spain News

In a recent development, Spanish and British authorities have solidified an extended agreement concerning the exchange of UK driving licences. The UK Embassy in Spain has taken proactive steps to address an ongoing issue faced by certain UK licence holders seeking to transition to Spanish licences. This particularly relates to individuals aged 70 and above, who have encountered difficulties during the exchange process.

The UK Embassy has offered reassurance that a practical solution has been devised. Individuals falling within the aforementioned age group will now have the opportunity to obtain a special code. This code holds the key to facilitating a successful licence exchange.

A statement released by the UK Embassy outlined their collaborative efforts with the Spanish Government, resulting in an agreement with Spain's Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT). This agreement encompasses the exchange of expired UK driving licences, provided they expired after the individual's relocation to Spain.

The means to achieve this lies in the utilisation of a digital "check code." This code serves as a channel for the DGT to verify the authenticity of these licences. While check codes were already a prerequisite for any licence exchange, they will soon incorporate additional information regarding expiration dates.

This development comes after a protracted post-Brexit episode, characterised by British citizens being prohibited from driving in Spain using their UK driving licences. Additionally, the inability to exchange these licences for Spanish equivalents, as mandated by law, further exacerbated the situation. Fortunately, in March, both governments arrived at an agreement, granting UK citizens residing in Spain the opportunity to once again swap their licences.

The newly introduced check code, a manifestation of licence expiration, boasts a validity of 21 days. Interested individuals can secure this code through the official Gov.uk website. The final steps towards implementing this enhancement rest with the DVLA, which is tasked with updating the codes to incorporate information regarding expired licences. Once completed, the DGT will be duly informed and prepared to accept such licences.

It's vital to underline that any UK national who spends more than six months as a resident in Spain and intends to drive must adhere to the mandate of exchanging their British licence for a Spanish equivalent. This latest agreement stands as a testament to the ongoing efforts of both nations to ensure a seamless transition for their citizens amidst changing circumstances.
