Spain's international airports greeted a total of 10.3 million passengers in July, marking an impressive 11.5% increase compared to the same month in 2022, according to recent data released by Turespaña. In comparison to the best historical data from July 2019, this figure only falls short by 1.62%.
Héctor Gómez, the acting Minister of Industry, Trade, and Tourism, highlighted, "Spain's position as a top-tier destination is evident from today's data, which affirm the favorable summer the sector is enjoying across all aspects. Record-breaking spending and tourist arrivals, coupled with a shift towards quality and sustainability, underline an unstoppable transformation."
The July influx of passengers to Spain originated from diverse countries, witnessing growth across the board. European Union sources constituted 56% of the total, with an 11.4% increase, while the remaining 44% from the rest of the world saw an 11.7% surge.
Year-on-year comparisons pinpoint the markets that experienced substantial growth in July. Poland led the way with a remarkable 34.7% increase, followed by Portugal and Italy, marking 23.3% and 18.8% growth respectively.
The United Kingdom contributed 24.1% of Spain's July passenger total, showing an 8.2% year-on-year rise. This surge significantly influenced all regions, with the Balearic and Canary Islands absorbing 28.7% and 20.1% of these visitors, respectively.
Passenger inflow from Germany (14.2% of the total) increased by 6.6%, with the Balearic Islands reaping the benefits most (48.4% of passengers).
Italy contributed 9.3% of July's passenger flow, with a noteworthy 18.8% year-on-year growth that particularly benefited Catalonia (27.4% of passengers) and Madrid (23.3%).
France accounted for 7.8% of the total July passengers, reflecting a 5.8% expansion that favored regions like the Balearic Islands (23.4% of passengers), Madrid (21.6%), and Catalonia (21%).
Passengers arriving from the Netherlands (4.7% of the total) experienced a 15% increase, with Catalonia as the primary destination (22.5% of passengers).
Regional Trends
The six most frequently visited autonomous communities (constituting 96.6% of the total) collectively enjoyed an 11.1% growth. The Balearic Islands claimed the highest share of arrivals (23.8% of the total), trailed by Catalonia (19.6%) and Madrid (19.4%). Among these six regions, the Valencian Community saw the most significant year-on-year growth (16.7%).
Madrid led in terms of arrivals from traditional airlines (35.5% share), while Catalonia experienced the highest increase compared to the same month in 2022 (25.3%).
In the domain of low-cost carrier traffic, the Balearic Islands held the top spot in arrivals share (26.9%), trailed by Catalonia (22.4%), and the Valencian Community showing the most substantial year-on-year growth (18.7%).
