The high-speed train network connecting Malaga and Madrid is set to expand, offering travellers more choices. Iryo, a private rail operator, recently introduced its services with up to four daily departures. Now, Renfe, the state-owned operator, is adding two additional AVE trains each day, starting on October 17, to meet growing demand.
The new service from Malaga will depart at 7:33 a.m., with the Madrid departure at 10:25 a.m. This increases Renfe's weekly offerings to 174 trains, translating to roughly 25 daily trains in both directions, varying by day. Fridays, for example, will see up to 14 travel options from Renfe, along with Iryo's services, providing 18 train frequencies connecting Madrid, Malaga, and stations in between.
Renfe is also adjusting timetables and journey durations for AVE and Avlo trains between Malaga and Madrid. These changes will be in place until waterproofing works on nine viaducts in Cordoba are completed, part of a rehabilitation plan led by ADIF.
These adjusted schedules will affect connections between Andalucia and Madrid, as well as routes to Valencia and Barcelona that use parts of the high-speed line.
Travellers can find updated schedules on Renfe's website and purchase advance tickets until January 31, 2024.
Renfe is also offering free passes for Cercanías, Rodalies, and Media Distancia travel during the third quarter, applicable to trips taken until December 21, 2023. Passes can be obtained through the Cercanías Renfe app and, for Media Distancia passes, via the website and usual sales channels.
Renfe maintains a 50 percent discount on passes for Avant railway services, also applying to other high-speed routes under the Public Service Obligation (OSP) framework. The subscriptions themselves are free, with a deposit of 10 euros for Cercanías and Rodalies passes and 20 euros for each conventional Media Distancia service pass, refundable upon completing 16 trips during the four-month period.
These enhancements provide travellers between Malaga and Madrid with a more convenient and flexible high-speed rail service.
