In another blow to energy consumers, it has been announced that the average cost of electricity in Spain is set to rise by a minimum of 10.5% in the first quarter of 2014.
This comes after recent hikes in 2013 of 1.2% in August and a 3.1% rise in October.
The energy companies have said that the rise is unavoidable and is due to an increase in the cost of buying the energy from the wholesale supply auctions, which has seen a rise of 26.5% in the first quarter.
Only a few days ago, analysts were predicting that bills would rise by around 5 or 6%
The changes will affect around 22 million electricity consumers across the country.
