Does Sanitas health insurance include repatriation for expats in Spain?
On most Sanitas plans, repatriation is an optional add-on, not included automatically. Sanitas repatriation cover returns an insured person to their country of origin after death in Spain, and a direct family member can travel with them. It costs €3,20 a month per person where optional, is included on Sanitas International Students and Sanitas Residents Visa, and has no waiting periods.
The repatriation add-on covers the cost of returning you to your country of origin in the event of death in Spain, so your family is not left to organise or pay for it at the hardest of times.
Sanitas arranges and pays for the transfer of the coffin to the place of burial in your country of origin, including the minimum obligatory coffin, embalming and the administrative formalities involved. As an alternative, at the family's request, it covers cremation at the place of death and the transport of the ashes to the place of burial in your country of origin. Transport is arranged all the way from the international airport to your home town or region.
A direct family member can travel with the deceased, and if the repatriation prevents accompanying insured family members from getting home as originally planned, the add-on also covers their transport back to their usual residence in Spain.
The cover is widely required for visa and residency applications, and there are no waiting periods, so you are covered from the first day of your policy.
How to add it: All add-ons are selected at the application form stage - when you take out a new Sanitas plan or at renewal - and apply to everyone insured on the policy.

Getting home after an emergency on a trip abroad comes under the Travel Assistance included with every comprehensive Sanitas plan. Transport from the international airport to the place of burial is covered up to the limit in the policy conditions, when the burial is more than 30 kilometres from the airport. The direct family member who travels with the deceased must have their usual residence in Spain, and their return trip is covered within 15 days of the date of death.

Can i purchase this option later?
